OH FER CRYIN’ OUT LOUD: Women do more water chores due to ‘neocolonial gender blind spot,’ UCLA study says.
Society isn’t paying enough attention to how American women are disproportionately burdened by home tap water use, according to a new study from the UCLA Streisand Center’s Gender and Water research hub.
That’s when I thought I’d accidentally stumbled into a Babylon Bee article, but no:
Even though women in the study claimed not to be unfairly burdened, anthropology Professor Jessica Cattelino and her research team made the case that they still are.
The study “Gender and residential water use in Los Angeles: Ingrained, untapped, and porous,” was published in June in the journal Environment and Planning E: Nature and Space. It followed 36 families in the Los Angeles area for several years, tracking their residential water use through interviews and water diary entries.
Related: Unintentional fatal injuries arising from unpaid work at home.
Unpaid work in and around the home is a common and potentially high risk activity, yet there is limited information about the circumstances surrounding resulting injuries. This study aimed to describe circumstances surrounding fatal injuries resulting from home duties activities, in order to identify and prioritise areas for prevention. Coroners’ reports on all unintentional deaths in Australia from 1989-92 inclusive were inspected to identify deaths of interest. Rates were calculated using population data and incorporating measures of time engaged in particular home duties activities. There were 296 home duties deaths over the four year period. Most (83%) deaths were of males, and males had 10 times the risk of fatal injury compared with females.

21ST CENTURY PROBLEMS: Tech Giants Voltron Up Against AI Safety Threats. “Nvidia and a host of tech giants on Monday launched a new artificial intelligence safety initiative focused on open models, as the fallout from a cyberattack committed by rogue OpenAI models continues.”
More:
A pretty extensive list of (mostly) American tech giants (NAVER and SK Telecom are South Korean companies, and SAP and Siemens are German). Hell, I’ve even worked for three companies on that list.
Notable omissions? OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, all of whom used closed rather than open AI models. Plus Apple, which made the conscious decision not to be a player in the AI space.
That’s an awful lot of collective brainpower to address the problem, but I wonder if the very size will make it unwieldy.
Also, I’m not sure how much I trust any of these guys — but there isn’t much choice.

WOEING: Boeing posts wider loss than expected as Air Force One costs weigh on results. “Boeing took a $280 million loss on the program to deliver two 747s that will serve as the next-generation Air Force One aircraft to the U.S. government as it said it ramped up investment for that plane. It said it still expects the first delivery in 2028.”
The order was formalized eight years ago this month — following a 2017 handshake deal — with delivery of the first aircraft due in 2024.

TIM O’BRIEN: The DSA and Its Revolution of Nihilism.
WELL, HE’S RIGHT: Trump takes aim at DSA, says ‘this is a serious threat,’ warns socialism leads to living in squalor.
Trump said Democrats aligned with the DSA were moving past socialism and toward communism, arguing that their policies would damage the American economy and institutions. “But they’re siding with the radical left communists taking over the party,” Trump said. “They want, in other words, the normal socialists who can destroy a country too. They’re not going fast enough. Do you remember, like, in one of my State of the Union speeches, I said, we will never be a socialist country. But I was right. We’re going to be a communist country,” he continued. “That’s what they want. They skipped socialism.”
Trump called communism “the greatest threat to our country in history,” comparing it to World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11. “This is a serious threat because they’re going to give, promise all sorts of things,” Trump said. “In one year, the country will be absolutely bankrupt. You’ll live in squalor. You’ll live in fear. You won’t have police. You won’t have firemen. You won’t have anybody.”
Trump’s comments come as the DSA has gained influence within Democratic politics, with a number of candidates backed by the organization defeating more establishment Democrats in recent primary elections.
For once, I’d argue Trump was being too kind.
