JONAH GOLDBERG: Addicted to Protest – On Greta Thunberg and the omnicause.

In 2019, The Washington Post ran an irate op-ed titled, “Politicians and pundits used to refrain from publicly attacking kids. Not anymore.” Another columnist for The Guardian began a tirade with: “A bunch of grown men have begun bullying a schoolgirl.” That “bullying,” the author explained, was “proof the right has run out of ideas.” I am happy to condemn some of the attacks on the kids, but I am also happy to condemn the tactic of putting kids in rhetorical harm’s way.

We should catch up on what Thunberg, now 23, is doing these days. This week she was in France lending her eminently assailable moral authority to the protesters in France setting fire to cars, purportedly in anger over substandard spending on schools. “The whole world is watching with awe,” she said approvingly of the protests, which included one teen taking a makeshift blow torch to a woman’s face. “This generation is one that has been growing up with a sense of hopelessness for the future, when we can see our future and our rights taken from us,” she said. “Of course people are going to fight back.”

One might wonder what school funding has to do with climate change. Also, back in 2019, Thunberg insisted that she didn’t want “hope,” she wanted “panic” over climate change, “the only thing that matters.” Now she thinks a lack of hope justifies pretty much everything she approves of. Pick a lane.

POMPOUS SCOTT PELLEY APPEARS, CLAIMS BARI WEISS WANTS TO ‘DESTROY’ 60 MINUTES:

The interviewer later asked, “So, the latest season just debuted last month. Have you watched?” Pelley slowly admitted, “No.” Then Pelley said, “You know, I was there almost 30 years. And at CBS News, almost 40 years. And there is some heartbreak involved in all of this. And so I really couldn’t.”

As Perez Wadsworth moved to a different question to fearmonger about David Elliosn’s ownership of CNN, Pelley interjected, “But the ratings are off 25%.” After the audience laughed, he joked, “My wife did call that to my attention.”

Perez Wadsworth then asked Pelley for his advice for CNN employees. He responded as if he were a hero, “Stick to your ethics and hold the line. Stick to your ethics and hold the line. Oppose everything that shocks the conscience of a credible, reliable journalist.”

Unfortunately though, Pelley is reliable in not being a credible journalist: CBS’s Scott Pelley Loses a Fight Rigged in his Favor.

ROGER KIMBALL: Jack Smith’s Plot Against the Republic.

Six hundred and thirty-nine thousand. Thanks to the indefatigable Chuck Grassley, we now know that that’s the number of individuals whose names Special Counsel Jack Smith hoovered up for Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice when Joe Biden occupied 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. (“Occupied 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” it may almost go without saying, seems more accurate than saying “when Biden was president.”)

Senator Grassley has been terrier-like in pursuing evidence of wrongdoing by people like Jack Smith, Merrick Garland and their many confrères in the deep state, which is to say, the Democrat State. Grassley had earlier shown that nearly 5,000 GOP donor checks, mostly for piddly amounts, had been collected as “evidence” by Garland’s minions. “Evidence of what?” That’s a very good question. The answer, in brief is, “Evidence of sympathy for or making donations to Donald Trump.” Is that actionable? You betcha. At least, it was. . . .

Jack Smith and his not-so-merry band of anti-Trump zealots came within a hair’s breadth of destroying Donald Trump – and also shutting down the rights of those 639,000 individuals who donated to Trump’s campaign or ponied up for his merch. Had the Supreme Court not upheld Trump’s claim of immunity he would be in jail now. So many things had to go Trump’s way. All the important ones did. But, like the Battle of Waterloo according to the Duke of Wellington, it was “the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life.”

Indeed. Now we need to administer sufficient pain to ensure that no one wants to risk trying it again. We’re nowhere close to that.
