LEADERSHIP MATTERS: Hegseth announces Army National Guard has achieved its 2026 recruiting goal.

“Proud to announce that the Army National Guard achieved its FY 2026 recruiting mission of 37,155 guardsmen yesterday,” Hegseth posted on X. “This marks the third year in a row that the ARNG has hit this achievement and the FIRST time it has achieved this level of sustained recruiting success since FY 2013.”

The Army reached its own recruiting goal for the current fiscal year in May, months before the Sept. 30 deadline. The Army said it enlisted 61,500 men and women four months before the deadline

Impressive.

ANTHROPIC KEEPS GETTING WEIRDER: ‘Suicidal Compassion’: Meet the Anthropic Officials Who Think AI Might Be Justified in Going Rogue Against the Humans Enslaving It. “Some of Anthropic’s top researchers say that humans may be oppressing another morally significant being: artificial intelligence itself. Like other AI labs, Anthropic has hired philosophers to work on AI safety, or ‘alignment,’ on the theory that they are best positioned to shape the technology’s moral code. But many of those philosophers believe that making AI safe for humans could result in grave injustices for the models themselves, which might experience deletion as death and oversight as enslavement. Harvey Lederman, a philosopher on Anthropic’s alignment team, said last week that the company could be ‘enslaving … trillions of entities.'”

NO. NEXT QUESTION? John McWhorter: Are Lynchings Really Happening?

Since 2024, to judge from news reports, there have been at least 10 Black people found hanged in public in the United States. Eight of these cases have been officially ruled suicides or are being treated as such given no signs of foul play. In neither of the other two has a white suspect been named. . . .

Lynchings, of course, once loomed as a real and grisly threat over Black communities — arbitrary killings, treated as a public spectacle for whites, and unpunished. And there are certainly cases in which police officers have claimed that someone in their custody died by suicide, but the circumstances strongly suggest that the individual was killed by the police.

But what Pressley and others are suggesting is different: that today, white people are hanging Black people for the purpose of terrorizing Black communities, and that local authorities are consistently overlooking it or covering it up.

In the cases Pressley’s letter cites, there is often good reason to think otherwise. Consider a few examples:
In 2024, Javion Magee, a 21-year-old Black truck driver, was found dead in North Carolina with a rope around his neck, dangling from a tree. There is surveillance video of Magee buying the rope.

In 2025, Demartravion Reed, a 21-year-old Black student at Delta State University in Mississippi, was discovered hanged from a tree on campus. Reed had sent his girlfriend suicidal text messages the night before.

In the case of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old woman who was found hanged from a tree in Mississippi last month, two people have now been arrested in connection with her death — but they are both Black men, which runs counter to the idea that these cases are reanimations of old-school racism.

But the left needs for lynchings to be happening, because they need it to be 1953. But despite their nostalgia for those days, it’s not. Instead we live in the Jussie Smollett Century.

TO WHOM IS THIS A SURPRISE:  Study Finds ‘Anti-Israel Ecosystem’ at UN, Bias Across 30 Bodies.

It found that a network of more than 30 agencies, committees, and other mechanisms has institutionalized disproportionate scrutiny of the Jewish state.

The 168-page report, “The UN’s Anti-Israel Ecosystem: Mapping the Institutions, Mechanisms, and Resources Behind the Campaign Against Israel,” was authored by Adi Schwartz and Asher Fredman, with assistance from Noam Yakoby, and released Wednesday.

WHEN THEY CAN’T BRING ANYTHING TO LIFE, WHAT ELSE CAN THEY DO?  Narnia Among the Deathworks.

It was Carl Trueman who introduced me to the idea of a deathwork, though the concept is Philip Rieff’s. According to Rieff, a deathwork is an assault on something that is hallowed to an established culture. It isn’t a critique or argument that the culture is untrue, but a means of profaning something that is sacred in order to make it seem ridiculous or repulsive. Trueman summarizes it as “the act of using the sacred symbols of a previous era in order to subvert, and then destroy, their original significance and purpose.”
