THE LAST WORD ON GREENLAND: NATO Froze Over.

In one stroke, the agreement solves the U.S.’s two biggest Greenland problems: the deal stands even if Greenland ever becomes independent, and it reportedly gives U.S. veto power over Chinese or Russian involvement in the island’s affairs. To the Times, this is a dismal failure: “the agreement fell well short of Mr. Trump’s longstanding demand of total control over Greenland.”

He got the bases, the ban, the veto, and forever, and the Times marked him down for not also getting the gift shop or inheriting Greenland’s welfare state.

But in the very same story, the Times also reported that the announced terms include: a larger U.S. military presence and a build permit; a ban on non-NATO bases or military presence; full flyover rights; continued effect after a future Greenlandic independence; and a U.S. approval right over sensitive Russian or Chinese investments.

As I have explained before at painful length, Trump’s public demands to buy Greenland were a negotiating anchor. Under the announced deal, Denmark “wins” by keeping sovereignty while simultaneously giving the U.S. everything we need. Without having to “buy” anything. It was a masterstroke of negotiation.

Denmark still holds the deed to Greenland, but the US now holds the key — in perpetuity.

LOS ANGELES: Dead Last In Housing Affordability.

Los Angeles spends a lot of taxpayer money on affordable housing, $399,228,000 in state funding and $1,919,897,000 in federal money for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Given all that spending, how does Los Angeles rank nationwide in housing affordability? Dead last.

Thanks to gobs of government spending, armies of regulators, and the tireless efforts of Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles has managed to make itself the least affordable city in America! A fine demonstration of what the Democrat Party can do to a city if they just run it long enough.

If Angelenos want to choose another direction… tough. The mayoral election runoff is between a Cuban-trained closet socialist, or an India-born, out-of-the-closet socialist.

TO BE FAIR, THEY’RE USUALLY IN HYSTERICS ABOUT SOMETHING: Congressional Democrats in Hysterics About Saving the World From AI.

One way to react to these demands for public money, cartel-like behavior, and something approaching extortion is to haul everyone involved with these companies into police stations for questioning. But rather than stopping tech tycoons taking the law into their own hands, lawmakers have descended into hysteria, demanding that somebody “do something” to save the world. House Democrats are calling on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to cancel recess and get to legislating. A bipartisan Senate group including Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is negotiating an AI safety bill that, among other things, would pre-empt the only existing state laws on AI safety.

Lawmakers have a poor track record on panic-induced lawmaking over the past quarter-century. After the September 11 attacks they compromised American liberty with the PATRIOT Act and struck out to start an endless war with Iraq, which had nothing to do with anything. After the financial collapse they used billions in taxpayer money to bail out banks while 10 million families lost their homes. In both cases, members of Congress had minimal understanding of the capabilities they were enabling, and listened to those who had better semblances of a plan, whether in the national security or banking establishment.

A smarter way to respond to the latest disaster is to avoid codifying the preferences of the very companies who are generating the panic.
