I WAS ONCE VOUCHSAFED A VISION, OR IF YOU PREFER A FEELING OR A CERTAINTY: It was the last day before the lockdowns went into effect in Colorado, (though of course I didn’t know that) and I woke up with a strong feeling I should go to mass (on a weekday). And early enough that I could. So I told my husband where I was going, got in the car and went. And while at mass I was vouchsafed a feeling with absolute certainty that things would get very bad indeed, but that at the end they would be better and the Republic closer to restored than its been my whole life. (I was born in the sixties. This is not as difficult as it sounds.) I didn’t know why I needed that feeling, but over the year plus of lockdown I came to see it as a gift to help me hold it together. (As much as I did.) I’m not a prophet, though, anymore than laughing wolf is. I don’t claim to know the details and what for. Was the “very bad” the lockdowns? Is there worse to come. I don’t know.
