WELL, CERTAINLY SCHIZOPHRENICS, AT LEAST: Feminist snobs who attack Sydney Sweeney’s naked body are hypocrites.
You get the sense from interviews with [Florence] Pugh that she’s a whip-smart free spirit, who trusts her instincts on how far to push boundaries, just as she resisted the industry bigwigs who suggested she could lose some weight early on in her career. She often sports risqué dresses on the red carpet (like the “naked”, nipple-revealing floral Rodarte dress she wore this month at the Klara and the Sun premiere) and once told Louis Theroux, “I’m quite confident. I’m quite happy in my skin. I’ve always been able to make sure that I’m heard.” I applaud her unapologetic ownership of her lovely body and exuberant style, which reminds me of that other gung-ho blonde goddess, Sydney Sweeney.
Except… Boy oh boy, does Sweeney reap a different critical reception – especially from women – whenever she disrobes, or dresses daringly. Pugh’s stance is widely commended as empowering. But when Sweeney chooses to pose naked for an ad, she is single handedly reversing women’s rights by decades. The actress’s recent participation in the prediction market platform Novig’s “Just Sports” campaign, saw Marie Claire denounce her for a retrogressive step that “sexualised female bodies”. Good thing Marie Claire has never, ever put a naked woman on its cover. Except, hang on, didn’t Cara Delevingne “Bare All” on the front cover of their September 2019 “Obsession Issue” (to pluck one of many examples)? Meanwhile the Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Ariarne Titmus called Sweeney’s decision not just, “a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft, but every woman who enjoys sport for what it really is”.
C’mon—this was the news cycle two weeks ago. Last week it was dominated by this story: Shane Gillis Must Be Stopped! (But Not Hasan Piker?)
Woke is conditional, and if “SNL” needed a ratings boost, so be it.
Gillis’ most recent “SNL” appearance found him teasing women who dress in barely-there shorts in public gyms.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know that women just dress like whores now [emphasis added]. I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe— have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts? Have you seen the shorts? Those neon — they’re like artificial bait colors. The wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look, you’re not allowed to look — for real don’t look because they are filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.”
That’s it. That’s the joke that launched a culture war crusade, with “Schitt’s Creek” alum Dan Levy leading the faux outrage parade.
For that, Gillis must be punished. Article after article after article said as much, coming from major institutions like The Hollywood Reporter, Today.com, Deadline and more.
Imagine the backlash Gillis must be facing!
