THE NEW SPACE RACE: ‘It’s going to be beautiful’: President Trump signs order to create US Space Academy.

President Donald Trump today (Aug. 28) signed an executive order creating the U.S. Space Academy, an institution of higher learning that will train students for a career studying, exploring, exploiting or helping to protect the final frontier.

“It’ll serve both the United States Space Force as well as NASA and the civilian spaceflight industry, and it’ll attract, train and graduate the very very best of our nation,” Trump said today during a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, at which he awarded the Artemis II moon astronauts the nation’s highest space honor.

Within the next 120 days, the commission will submit a report “with recommendations on governance framework, service obligations for graduates, physical location of the academy, legislative requirements and more,” NASA officials wrote in today’s statement.

It’s a shame the name Starfleet Academy is sullied.

NIFTY: Army awards $2.2B in contracts for nuclear microreactors.

The initiative, dubbed Project Janus, looks to achieve greater energy independence so critical military missions can continue if the commercial electrical grid fails.

“Everything that we do, from communications to radar, just requires constant energy,” Jeff Waksman, principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment, told reporters Wednesday. “As we start to think about where things are going in the future with drones, with energy weapons, there’s just more and more demand for electricity.”

Nuclear energy is a “natural game-changer” for the Army, he added.

My offer to host a microreactor in my backyard to power the neighborhood remains open.

WELL, GOOD: Hoplophobe’s Hell: More Americans Are Rejecting Gun Control. “The decline wasn’t a landslide, but represents a consistent trend downward for America’s gun control industry. Sure, the right to keep and bear arms isn’t an 80/20 issue — yet — but it’s favorable enough that almost no one running for Congress outside a handful of crime-soaked blue cities wants to test voter support for more gun control laws.”
